Third Sydney Route Announced Today Bringing Gold Coast Five Flights Per Day

Tiger Airways announced it will launch flights between Sydney and Gold Coast from this December.

Fares for the new route go on sale today starting from just $39* one way (Tiger raw fare including taxes and charges). Tiger Airways flights between Sydney and Gold Coast will start from 15 December 2009 with a daily flight between the two destinations.

Shelley Roberts, Managing Director, Tiger Airways Australia, says today’s Sydney-Gold Coast route announcement is another significant milestone for Australia’s fastest growing major domestic airline.

British Airways strike to affect Christmas travel plans of a million passengers

santa18Thousands of British Airways staff voted to strike from 22 Dec to 2 Jan, a move that will impact the travel plans of a million passengers. Its a no-brainer that this is one of the busiest time of the year for the travel industry, and this strike will lead to cancellations of most of the flights. This has been triggered by a dispute over changing working conditions including a cut in the number of staff on board each flight, a freeze on pay and new recruits getting less favourable contracts, something deemed essential for British Airways to overcome its reported annual losses.

easyJet demands legislation for cleaner aircraft

easyJet, Europe’s leading low-fares airline, today became the first airline to call for tough, mandatory emission standards for aircraft that would lead to a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions from the next generation of aircraft.

Speaking at a press conference in London today, Andy Harrison, easyJet’s Chief Executive said:

“Aviation needs a global solution. Government’s first instinct is to tax, but this won’t deliver sustainable aviation as the industry’s growth is concentrated in China and India. Step change technology is in the pipeline, and we need tough legislation on emission standards for it to be delivered sooner.

Heathrow’s Terminal 2 closes as work on its £1 billion replacement gets underway

Passengers will check in at Heathrow’s Terminal 2 for the last time on Monday as, after 54 years of service, it is closing to make way for a stunning £1 billion replacement.

The airport’s first terminal opened in 1955 and fast became a backdrop to the gliterati as icons from the stage and screen passed through its doors. Stars and royalty including The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Princess Grace and Princess Margaret have all used Terminal 2.

China Eastern Airlines to merge with Shanghai Airlines by year-end

China Eastern Airlines, the country’s third biggest carrier, said yesterday that it would complete its merger transaction with Shanghai Airlines by the end of the year.

“All the legal procedures will be completed by the end of 2009,” said Ma Xulun, general manager of China Eastern.

The Shanghai-based carrier said in July it would buy smaller rival Shanghai Airlines via a 9-billion-yuan share swap that would give it a market share of over 50 percent in China’s financial hub.
